Students Scoop Top College Awards
Proud students were celebrating success after scooping top awards at the first ever Thames Gateway College BTEC Awards ceremony.
The eight students from a range of BTEC courses at the Rainham based college scooped the titles of Outstanding Academic Achievement, 100% Attendance and Most Improved Student of the Year.
Principals Noel Otley from Havering College and Ted Parker from Barking College presented the students- William Caine, James Cowley, Rajpal Singh, Sabir Khan, Jack Somers, Alex Bryce and Jabaar Raja-with their awards during a special ceremony held in September. Among the guests attending the event were senior college staff and fellow students.
Student Edmoses Theophil bagged the top award of the day after walking off with the coveted Student of the Year title. Edmoses, 26, from Manor Park is on the National Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering course.
Speaking of his win he said: “I joined Ford when I was 23 and realised I needed a trade of some kind to push my career forward. I’ve always been interested in science and Ford has a good training scheme, so helped me pursue my training in this area.
“The course has been excellent. I’ve learnt so much and feel really confident. The technology we have access to at the college has been amazing! I really do feel privileged to be on the course as spaces are limited.
“I had no idea I’d get the award. It was a total surprise. I can be bit of a joker so thought someone was having a laugh on me when they called my name out for the award. It was bit of a shock when it sank in that I had actually really won! Everyone on this course has had to overcome their own hurdles so I feel this really represents all of us and not just me.”
Martina Ola-Bella, Head of BTEC programmes at HaveringCollege made up part of the awards judging panel and said: “It was a really difficult judging as all of the nominations were of a very high standard. It real was a close call amongst most of them. We hope to repeat the awards success again next year!”
Thames Gateway College was formed in partnership between Havering and Barking College in 2003 and was officially opened by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair.
